Kid's drawing of a Christmas Nativity. The star shines down right on baby Jesus in the middle of the stable.

As I was preparing to write this piece I decided to Google what the true meaning of Christmas was. The first thing that came up was the celebration of Christ’s birth. I couldn’t agree more with this. I believe that Christmas can be a lot of things, but first and foremost it is about the blessing of Christ into this world and ultimately our lives.

You have probably already heard the story of the three wise men, the Star of David, and the manger — all things that are very important and memorable. I believe personally that a lot of other meanings have stemmed from Christ’s birth. For example, the desire to give and serve. This is what He encompasses. Christ is all about service and charity. December is the month of Christ, which in turn I would argue is why we are all so inclined to help, volunteer and serve each other.

Why the True Meaning of Christmas Inclines Us to Be Charitable

In the Book of Mormon, Moroni 7:46-47 says, “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, if ye have not charity, ye are nothing, for charity never faileth. Wherefore, cleave unto charity, which is the greatest of all, for all things must fail —

“But charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever; and whoso is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him.”

The Apostle Paul taught the same principle to the Corinthians in the New Testament.

This gives the perfect perspective of why we all may be more inclined to be charitable during the Christmas season.

I love the Christmas season! Getting presents, setting up decorations and watching Christmas movies are some of my favorite things to do. It is also important to remember what it is truly about, and that is Jesus.

We sometimes get caught up in all of the festivities and we easily forget that the true meaning of Christmas is to reflect on, appreciate, and serve Christ. This can be as easy as making a treat to give to your neighbor or even shoveling a driveway. We have so many opportunities to serve; all we need to do is simply look.
