The Bryce Valley team at State Debate.

This is an old news article from a previous year. The results in this article are from state debate 2022. To read the election results from 2023, go to State Speech and Debate Results 2023.

Goodness, what a busy time of year for school activities at Panguitch High School! From clubs like FCCLA to sports like Track and Field, things have been lively with meets and show-stopping competitions at both the region & state levels. I got to compete at State Speech and Debate!

State Debate took place at Salem Hills High School on March 11-12. Because of the distance, Panguitch left for State on the 10th after school. After we ate dinner we had some fun playing laser tag, bowling, and overall just having a good time hanging out with each other.

The Competition Begins!

On the morning of the 11th, the competition started with the “Speech” categories such as Impromptu, Extemporaneous, Congressional, and Oratory. Between rounds, all of the schools hung out in the lunchroom as participants waited for postings — a spreadsheet that tells students which room they are to be judged in next.

We woke up early the next morning and began the “Debate” categories: Public Forum, Lincoln-Douglas, and Spontaneous Argumentation. Another day of debate came and those who had competed the day before chatted in the lunchroom or watched the other rounds quietly until the awards assembly began.

Overall, Panguitch took third place! Bryce Valley did very well, taking second place, and Intermountain Christian took first.

An amazing job was done by all. Speaking in front of people is not always an easy thing to accomplish, and every competition had certain obstacles, both the expected and otherwise. Nothing worth doing is ever easy, and it’s by doing the difficult things that we learn and grow the most. I just want to say “great job” to everyone in debate, and best of luck to many other competitions that are coming our way.
