Panguitch High Happenings in Second Half of School Year

The students at Panguitch High are excited to begin the second half of the school year. There are many activities and sports happening these first few months. There has been a slow start to the new year as many students are struggling to recover from their long winter break.

Prior to the long break the school had their homecoming dance. The theme for the dance was a winter wonderland since the dance was scheduled to be on the first day of winter break instead of the usual end of January date.

Student of the month is James Houston with the teacher of the month being science teacher Kenneth Thornock. Getting student and teacher of the month here at Panguitch High is something to be proud of. These students and teachers earn this title as they prove their hard work and dedication to this successful school. The student of the month is voted on by the teachers while the teacher of the month is chosen by the principal as he examines who might deserve it that month.

An interview with students about their favorite winter activity reveals that many students find outdoor activities such as skiing and snowboarding to be their favorite activity. Aside from snowboarding would be their winter sports and to hang out with their friends.

To kick things off with sports, there was state cheerleading on January 22nd, the girls cheered hard coming in at 3rd place overall.

To follow that up is state wrestling on February seventh and eighth. The Panguitch wrestling team have performed amazingly with only one dual loss on their record for this season. This record has placed the Panguitch Bobcats as the number one seed in 1A wrestling.

Lastly to conclude the winter sports, boys and girls state basketball is from February 26th through March first. Basketball has been very eventful and successful throughout the longest season in high school sports. Both girls’ and boys’ basketball teams have had a pretty successful season to date playing a total of 33 games together and losing just nine combined. Boys basketball defeated Kanab High School which was the number one ranked 2A team in a tight game on Tuesday the 21st. Now stakes are high as both teams enter the final stages of the season, each hoping to enter the state tournament in a good position.

To go along with these exciting events will be a spirit week the first week of February as a way to launch into the state championships for our sports.

Keeping with February’s typical theme of love, the high school has their sweethearts dance on February 21st. Following the trend of the previous sweetheart’s dances, boys will buy roses from the school to give to the person they want to go to the dance with.

There are many more activities and sports to come in the following months. Both students and staff at Panguitch High are very excited to see what happens.
