The annual Garfield County Spelling Bee was held at Bryce Valley Elementary on Tuesday, February 13, 2024. Boulder Elementary couldn’t make it, but 4th-6th grade students from the four other schools in the district competed for the first place spot.
Fourth grade winners were:
- 3rd place – Cameron B. (Panguitch).
- 2nd place – Brylie B. (Panguitch).
- 1st place – Maya M. (Bryce Valley).
Fifth grade winners were:
- 3rd place – Dillon M. (Escalante).
- 2nd place – Jennette G.-G. (Escalante).
- 1st place – Leslie X.-J. (Bryce Valley).
Sixth grade winners were:
- 3rd place – Chad W. (Panguitch).
- 2nd place – Meridian G. (Escalante).
- 1st place – Boden S. (Bryce Valley).
“The 4th grade tournament whittled down to two participants rather quickly,” said Pete Peterson, Principal at BVE. “Then when there were just two left, it went on for over one half hour. Brylie and Maya were amazing.”
In the end, Bryce Valley swept first place. Each student won a traditional screaming fire truck ride and treats. Special thanks to Tropic Fire Department and Travis LeFevre for helping the kids celebrate!
This year is the second year for the Garfield County Spelling Bee, and the schools are excited to continue making it an annual tradition.
