Piute Student’s ‘Depth of a Soul’ on Exhibit in Springville Art Show

“The eyes are the window to the soul, so what would it look like if that window was broken?” Piute senior Becky King wondered as she thought about her next art piece, The Depth of a Soul. That question, paired with her sharp skills in visual art, was what got her into the prestigious Utah All-State High School Art Show at the Springville Museum of Art.

This is actually Becky’s second year of being featured in the exclusive 11-12 grade show. Her first piece, Cookie, captured the memory of a beloved childhood pet cat.

For this year, though, Becky wanted to draw something that is broken — that you can’t really see. She remembered hearing the saying about eyes being the window to the soul, and from there, she just “went along with it.”

Becky’s broken window reflects not only the pain of a broken soul, but all of the passion and personality that she puts into her art. “When I’m doing art, that’s the only thing I think about,” she said. For anyone who knows Becky, they’re probably not at all surprised that she does art to relax and get away from everything, though she also enjoys puzzling and being near the ocean.

When asked if there was anyone else she wanted to recognize, Becky pointed straight to her teacher. “That would be my art teacher, Aleia Nay. It was really hard to get the final pieces done,” Becky said. “She helped me along. And she told me about this art contest. I would never have even known that there was an art show if she hadn’t told me about it and helped me get ready for it.”

Becky King’s art will be on exhibit at the Springville Museum of Art February 3-March 22, 2024.
