Thanksgiving: One of My Favorite Holidays

“Thanksgiving: One of My Favorite Holidays” is the fifth of seven Thanksgiving articles received in fall of 2023 from Wayne High School students. Five of them were published in The Byway’s most recent November paper. All will be featured online.

Every year, my family and I always have a great time during Thanksgiving. No matter where we are, we always make the most of it. Each year we alternate going to my Grandma Torgerson’s house and my Grandma and Grandpa Melling’s house. It’s always so fun wherever we go because no matter what, we always get to hang out with our cousins.

Whenever we go to my Grandma and Grandpa Melling’s house, there are usually quite a bit of family members there. It’s always so fun to catch up with people and see how they have been, especially the ones we don’t see as often.

We always end up visiting and watching football or playing games. On the rare occasion that it has snowed, we like to sled. We also love to eat the food and leftovers the rest of the week. We usually eat things like salad, pie, ham, turkey, stuffing and much, much more. My personal favorite would have to be the pie and the homemade rolls.

Whenever we go to the Melling side we always end up staying for almost the whole Thanksgiving break because they live in Cedar City. We also go and set up my great grandma’s Christmas lights.

If it’s the Torgersons’ year, we also have a really fun time. We start by waking up and going over to my grandma’s house over in Lyman. The moms usually stay and help finish cooking the delicious meal while the rest of us go hunt rabbits. It’s always so fun to go hunt rabbits because everyone gets the chance to find and shoot one. It’s really fun to go with the rest of our cousins because being with them always makes it that much more fun.

Once we hunt rabbits for a couple hours, we head back to the house to eat. We settle in and sit down at the table. Everyone starts passing around the food. I love the rolls. They are always so delicious and good. Then everyone digs in and enjoys the food. While eating, everyone visits and catches up with each other. After everyone eats, we eat dessert which is usually some delicious homemade pie.

Because I have such a good time every year during Thanksgiving, I would have to say that it’s probably one of my favorite holidays. I love the fall air and to see the leaves falling from the trees. My family and I always go up the mountain to look at the beautiful leaves falling from the trees; whenever we go up, we try to make a day out of it and take a lunch and get firewood. This has become a tradition for us and has always taken place during Thanksgiving or fall break. It’s a memory I will always cherish, and hope to do with my family when I have one of my own.

My Thanksgiving traditions are awesome. It’s always so fun to see family members I haven’t seen in a while, and it’s also fun to hang out with all my cousins. Having my family makes everything so much better.

I am thankful for getting to have the Thanksgiving I have, and I am very thankful for my family that makes it so much fun. Lastly, I am also thankful for the delicious food I get to enjoy every year and the work and effort that goes into making it taste so good. I wouldn’t want to trade my Thanksgiving experience for anything! I always have the best time and there’s no other way I’d want it to be.
