Forever Connected as the Class of 2023

Distinguished guests, esteemed faculty, administrators, friends, family, and my fellow graduates of the extraordinary Class of 2023, it is with immense pride and gratitude that I stand before you today. As we bid farewell to Panguitch High School, I am filled with a deep appreciation for the countless memories and experiences we have shared together. Words cannot express how grateful I am to have been a part of PHS.

In this diverse and talented class of 2023, we have had the privilege of creating unforgettable memories. Whether it was Arik fearlessly jumping into the river during our hike at Zion National Park; Korban mesmerizing us with his rendition of “Speechless” during a class field trip; bring your pet to school day gone wrong when Skyler let his cat down, and my dog dragged me across the grass chasing after his cat as the whole class watched in terror; Tucker grilling food everywhere he goes; Hunter’s incredible knack for cracking jokes at senior sunrise; Luke breaking the club at Big Shots; our class convincing Mrs. Cowan to Griddy; or the senior prank that got slightly out of hand. These little moments have defined our time together and will forever be etched in our hearts.

Today, I extend my heartfelt appreciation to our exceptional teachers, administrators, and staff, who have guided us with unwavering dedication and support. Your commitment to our success and well-being has been truly remarkable.

To my classmates, thank you for the countless laughs, friendships, and memories. Not to mention that we have contributed 16 state titles and 12 second-place titles of which many of us have been involved in. Including the hundredth and hundred-and-first team titles from the girl’s and boy’s track and field teams.

It has been an honor to add to the legacy Panguitch High School has set before us. These championships have not only been an accomplishment but built our character and brought us closer. I know that I will always look back on and cherish the time we have had growing up together, and I hope each one of you will too. Your unique talents and passions have been a big part of our journey, and I am excited to witness the paths you will forge in the years to come.

I would be remiss if I didn’t express my deepest gratitude to the ones who have been my pillars of strength throughout this incredible journey—my parents. Your unwavering support, unconditional love, and endless sacrifices have molded me into who I am today. Your guidance and encouragement have been invaluable, and I am forever grateful for the example you have set before me.

Now, as we embark on our individual journeys, there are three key principles I would like the Class of 2023 to carry with them.

1. Embrace the Challenges

First and foremost, embrace the challenges that come your way. Consider the inspiring stories of those who have faced setbacks and persevered.

Walt Disney was fired from the Kansas City Star because his editor perceived that he lacked imagination and good ideas. Thomas Edison’s teachers told him he was “too stupid to learn anything,” Thurl Bailey experienced rejection when he was cut from the high school basketball team. Even Abraham Lincoln faced defeat when he ran for president.

Let us remember the words of Michael Jordan, who once said, “I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

It is through failure that we can learn and improve ourselves for the future. Achievements are not attained overnight, in a week, or even in a year. It is accomplished through consistent small steps taken each day over the course of five years, ten years, or fifteen years. How much better can you become?

While I cannot guarantee your path to success, I assure you, you have just as much potential as the person sitting next to you. Do not be afraid to pursue your dreams, chase your goals, and overcome any obstacles in your way. Every day brings new opportunities for success, and with unwavering determination, we can attain greatness.

2. Maintain a Positive Attitude

Secondly, it is crucial to maintain a positive attitude in all aspects of your life. Your mind possesses incredible power, and I have witnessed the profound impact of a positive mindset on our athletic teams and my personal journey. For instance, we can all concur that running is not a simple task; it demands as much mental strength as physical toughness.

Therefore, maintaining a positive outlook while racing becomes absolutely essential. The moment you convince yourself that you cannot achieve something, you deprive yourself of the opportunity to succeed. If you stay positive good things and good people will be drawn to you.

3. Values for Character

Lastly, embrace the values that do not necessarily require talent, but rather, shape character

When I reflect upon the piece of paper my mom hung by my mirror when I was merely ten years old, I am reminded of the qualities that can bring profound success into our lives. It boldly declares, “Zero talent required: Being on time, work ethic, effort, body language, energy, attitude, passion, being coachable and teachable, doing extra, and being prepared.”

Recognizing that not all success is solely determined by innate talent is essential. In every facet of life, there exist attributes that demand no special talent. Cultivating these virtues will undoubtedly pave the way for a future that is both fulfilling and prosperous.

In closing, as we go our separate ways, my fellow graduates, let us embrace the challenges, seize the opportunities, and live life to the fullest. May we create a future filled with unforgettable moments that take our breath away, forever connected as the remarkable Class of 2023.
