This is an old news article from a previous year. The results in this article are from state FBLA 2023. To read Piute’s state results from 2024, go to Another Great Year for Piute FBLA.
One of the favorite clubs and the one that has the highest members at Piute High School is FBLA, or the Future Business Leaders of America club. FBLA members headed to Layton, Utah, to attend the state competition from March 6-8.
Throughout the year members of FBLA prepare for the big state event. Members take a quick business test of their choice for the region and then start getting ready for the state competition. For the state competition students can either take a test or make a presentation. To qualify for nationals the best bet to go about is to make a presentation. However, it isn’t impossible to qualify for nationals by taking a test.
Preparing for State
For the presentation aspect students can either get into groups of three or can go solo. Most get into groups of three.
There are many projects to choose from, but they all require a lot of work and attention if the students wish to place at state. Certain presentations have certain requirements, but most all include: a slide show, a script, a report on the event, and lots of pictures. Groups can split the work up however they want to as long as everyone has a part. Students can look at past presentations for inspiration, but the work should all be done by themselves.
Some of the events or activities that Piute High School holds are for certain projects like the Community Service or American Enterprise System category.
Piute at State FBLA
Monday
The Piute T-Birds loaded up on a bus and headed to Layton, Utah, for the state competition Monday. When the FBLA members arrived at their hotel the competition started for some. Preliminary rounds for the groups of Publication Design, Public Speaking, Broadcasting and Public Service Announcement started just shortly after their arrival. Seeing that there were many groups in each of these presentations, the preliminary rounds were set in place to eliminate some groups. The goal: make it past the first round.
The city of Layton compared to the small county of Piute has many options for students to go to, so for meals, the students could take a short walk to a restaurant of their choosing as long as they didn’t go alone.
Tuesday
On Tuesday students had breakfast at the hotel and then headed over to the conference center for the opening ceremony. FBLA members had to be in business attire anytime they entered the conference center. For the opening session the state committee introduced themselves, then the parade of presidents introduced themselves and their schools. Afterward those running to be a state officer gave a quick speech to the audience. After the speeches the audience was adjourned to get ready for their presentations or go do activities.
Presentations were given all day long. Each category was presented in front of two or three judges. After the presentations were given the judges could ask questions of their choice to get some more information about the project. Around 3:00 and 4:00 p.m., chapter officers could vote for the delegates. To end the night the Awards of Excellence for Objective testing started at 6:00 p.m..
Wednesday
From 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. the final rounds for some took place. After all presentations were given Piute loaded their bus up and went to the mall before heading back over to the conference center for the Awards Ceremony Presentation Students and the announcement of the new Utah State Officers. This year Piute High School’s FBLA members overall did a fantastic job and many placed in the top 10! The Piute chapter also won the Gold Seal Chapter Award of Merit-Outstanding Distinction.
