Cannonville Post Office Closes Indefinitely

The Cannonville Post Office closed indefinitely this week shortly after the passing of its former postmaster, Dawn Stock.

Dawn worked for the Cannonville Post Office for many years. In recent times she has shared the job with Anita Fletcher. After Dawn’s passing on October 30, however, many worried that the town’s resources would not support another postmaster.

These worries came to fruition less than a month later.

Not long before Cannonville residents left for Thanksgiving vacations, they were notified that the post office might not be operational for much longer. As Cannonville’s P.O. was an extension of Tropic’s, it seemed logical that the mail would stop there, and Cannonville-ites would have to go to Tropic to get their mail. But at this point the news was still hearsay.

Sure enough, though, by Tuesday of the next week P.O. boxes had been cleaned out and the contents transferred to the Tropic Post Office five miles away.

Fortunately there will be no effect on addresses or ownership of the boxes. The transition to Tropic is also quite smooth.

It is unclear how long this closure will last, but for the foreseeable future, Cannonville-ites may just have to get used to driving to get their mail.

Public Notice: We are temporarily closed...
Public notices are taped up around the P.O. letting Cannonville-ites know where to go to get their mail.
