Another Great Year Planned for the T-Birds

Students at Piute High School have officially been back to school for a week now. With the new school year in session, they welcome new students, 7th graders, faculty and staff.

Being a Thunderbird is a wonderful experience, but what is it like to be T-birds? Here are some things the T-birds shared about Piute High.

Kinley S., a junior at Piute says, “The best thing about Piute is how close we all are. Not only us students, but the staff as well. We are kinda like this big family.”

Destri M., a 7th grader says, “It’s a small town and I know everyone.”

Kazlee K., a freshman says, “I’m excited to be in high school this year! I get to play sports and be more involved in things. I get to make more friends that will last a lifetime. I have more class opportunities … some more fun than others.”

Wes A., a junior says, “Piute High school is a great place with a good campus. It has good vibes. It does, however, have an even better baseball team.”

Now that you’ve heard about what it’s like to be a Thunderbird, let’s take a look at what Piute High School has planned for the year.

Cooper F., Piute high school’s student body president states, “This year the student council plans on bringing more school spirit to our crowd and to become more united as a student body. We plan on increasing participation in school activities and helping students have a memorable year.”

One program coming back this year is the Piute Proud program. This program started back in 2019 and the club is for anyone in Piute High School, including the 7th and 8th graders. Piute Proud stands for: Participation, Respect, Ownership, Unity and Dependability.

Meri Vasquze, an English teacher, explains how the program works. “Dan Springer runs our Piute Proud program. Us teachers get cards to hand out to students who follow the Piute Proud standards. To hand out our cards, we write the name of the student down. We also write down if they were kind, helpful, following directions, and overall just being a good student and person. The students then take that ticket to the office, to put in a large container with other student tickets. During the morning announcements, drawings are held. The cards are drawn daily, bi-weekly and yearly. The student’s card who is picked wins a prize.”

Mrs. Vasquez adds that the yearly prizes are bigger than the daily ones, and can include speakers, belts, hammocks, Google speakers, kayaks, trail cams and more. “I see students’ faces brighten up because they are being recognized and their good deeds aren’t going unnoticed.”

Kyle Morgan, a 2021 graduate, says, “I’m glad to be from Piute. It has helped me become who I am today.”

Tim Westwood, the girls basketball coach says, “I went to Piute [as a student] and here I am again, coaching this time around. I’m glad my kids have the opportunity to come to this amazing place.”

We can’t wait to see what else happens this year at Piute. Go T-Birds!
