family watching general conference

On October 1 and 2, 2022, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will air their 192nd semiannual general conference.

General conference offers a wide variety of passionate messages that intend to bring peace, comfort and joy through the gospel of Jesus Christ, to each of its listeners — regardless of race, religion, political affiliation or ethnicity.

In order to invite all to come and hear this message, the church ensures that all sessions are streamed live on the live broadcasts page of ChurchofJesusChrist.org. The option to either watch or listen is available on the general conference YouTube channel, the Gospel Library app found on your mobile device, or even on radio, television, satellite and digital channels.

As one who had the opportunity to watch general conferences growing up, I thoroughly enjoy each and every session, and look forward to it each year. I find peace in listening to those who dedicate their time, effort and talents to not only serve the Lord, but serve each and every one one of us as well. I am beyond grateful for each speaker and know that their words are influenced and directed by thoughtful prayers and led by promptings from heavenly beings.

However, listening isn’t always easy! I would be lying if I claimed that I don’t occasionally drift off or turn my thoughts towards something else. Becoming tired and distracted is not uncommon, so I have discovered new methods over time, based on my interests, that allow me to both listen and enjoy my time doing so.

These methods include:

  • Drawing and coloring the tie of each male speaker.
  • Drawing a picture from each talk that relates to a story that was told.
  • Picking a Gospel-related word before the session & keeping track of how many times it was said.

Methods to keep young kids engaged include:

  • Printing a general conference Bingo sheet.
  • Printing a general conference “I Spy” game.
  • Putting together general conference booklets that give children a personalized space to draw pictures or write down their thoughts.

No matter who we are, each of us can benefit in different ways as we listen to general conference. Because the speakers seek to share the message of Jesus Christ, the conference goes hand in hand with messages of love, kindness, service, compassion and being a better and more thoughtful person overall — traits that each of us should seek to obtain regardless of religious affiliation.

The church extends this invitation personally: “We invite everyone—of all faiths, beliefs, and backgrounds from everywhere in the world—to watch, listen, and participate.”

I likewise encourage each of you to find time and take the opportunity to watch general conference this weekend, that you may find peace in the true and empowering message of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
