Lake Powell School Reads 1560 Minutes for Dr. Seuss’ Birthday!

LAKE POWELL, Utah — Last night Lake Powell School celebrated Dr. Seuss’ 119th birthday with a reading party. This event joined with countless other schools in a nationwide initiative to promote reading among children, teens and families.

Lake Powell School’s Birthday Celebration

LPS’s celebration encouraged reading in ways that were fun and engaging for students, including a variety of Dr. Seuss-themed activities. The children had fun coloring “Cat in the Hat” hats and reading with their families. They were also invited to color in a candle flame on Dr. Seuss’s cake each time they read another book.

With all of the reading minutes added together from this event, Lake Powell was able to make a huge dent in their end-of-the-year reading goals.

“We have a reading challenge each year, and this year the challenge is to read 120,000 minutes before the last day of school. This event brought in 1560 of those minutes,” said Principal Kay Townsend.

At the end of the night each student received a new book to take home.

A Nationwide Initiative to Promote Reading

Since 1998, schools have been celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday, now often referred to as Read Across America Day. Many schools celebrate with birthday events like Lake Powell’s, dress-up days, school reading days, and even green-eggs-and-ham days!

The hope is that these events will foster a love of reading in today’s students.

As Dr. Seuss wrote, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” We cannot wait to see where these kids go.
