Tropic — The first annual Garfield County spelling bee was held at Bryce Valley Elementary on February 27 after twice being delayed because of weather. Students in grades 4, 5 and 6 from four of the five elementary schools came together to compete in this event.
Fourth grade winners were:
- 3rd place – Veronica Flores from Bryce Valley.
- 2nd place – Alayna Menet from Panguitch.
- 1st place – Jack Shakespeare also from Panguitch earned top honors.
Fifth grade winners were:
- 3rd place – Taylee Frandsen from Panguitch.
- 2nd place – Declan Leibbrandt also from Panguitch.
- 1st place – Chad Walter who also hails from Panguitch took the winning award.
Sixth grade winners were:
- 3rd place – Sophie Woolsey from Panguitch.
- 2nd place – Ryder Roberts of Escalante.
- 1st place – Paetyn Frandsen from Panguitch is the 6th grade champion.
Students represented themselves, their parents and the community with high standards and true sportsmanship — there were high fives and handshakes when students were eliminated.
Garfield County School District looks forward to making the spelling bee an ongoing annual activity.
