In a heartfelt effort to honor the memory of veterans, the WHS student government organized several meaningful activities for the students.
In the morning, we had the privilege of hearing from Ron Newman, a veteran who bravely served for several years. His journey included an initial period of service followed by a pause before he returned to serve. During this time, he was stationed at Camp Spann, where he played a vital role in training Afghan forces to enhance their military operations.
After Ron shared his experiences with us, each student received a flag to place in the grass right in front of the building. Now, those flags stand proudly, a symbol of our respect and gratitude for those who serve.
I talked with Sherry Ellett (WHS teacher) about her feelings regarding Ron’s talk. She expressed, “It was nice to hear his perspective on his time and service in Afghanistan.” I also got a heartfelt quote from Alora Torrey (7th grade): “I felt and thought that some amazing things happened. As he was talking, I remembered my mom’s stories about our family members who have served. I also felt very thankful and grateful to have such amazing people who serve our country every day.”
It was a day filled with enjoyable and memorable activities that we shared together. I truly hope the students found joy in listening to Ron and felt a sense of pride as they placed the flags in the ground.
