As State Representative Phil Lyman prepares to vacate his seat at the end of this year, Utah’s House District 69 is an open contest between Democrat Davina Smith and Republican Logan Monson, both of Blanding.
Utah’s House District 69 is by far the largest district by landmass, encompassing the southeast one-third of the entire state. It is home to four of Utah’s five national parks, two of the nation’s largest national monuments, and the Navajo Nation.
On September 24, I traveled to Blanding to interview both Davina Smith and Logan Monson, separately, to ask them their positions on issues we think are most relevant to those living on the west side of the district.
The interviews each lasted just under one hour and both candidates were measured in their responses, at least while on record. Neither candidate discussed their opponent much at all and didn’t appear to know each other very well. These two articles lay out the policy positions of both candidates based on their comments made during the interviews.
An audio recording of each interview is available at each of these articles: Davina Smith, Democrat and Logan Monson, Republican.

AJ Martel – Escalante
AJ Martel is the youth coordinator at The Byway, but he is involved in most everything. He and his family live in Escalante, and they love it here! AJ has found Utah’s small towns quite inviting and under-defended, which is why he’s so involved with the paper. What AJ loves to do most, though, is serve his community. That is clear through everything he writes and does for Escalante, Utah.
