As the month of September has come to a close, it is important to remember and commemorate the meaning of Gold Month. If it wasn’t known already, the gold ribbon is the symbol of childhood cancer and its impact on our communities. As a result, a month was set aside for representing and supporting those with childhood cancer, hence the name Gold Month. Students of Bryce Valley High School held nothing back and chose to Go Gold this month by getting involved in various activities and competitions with an intent to support those struggling with childhood cancer. We hosted dress up days during the week and also did service projects.
One of these activities was what we call the Gold Game. This activity was clearly a success as students, teachers, and members of the community gathered to watch a volleyball game, but more importantly to support the cause. Everyone wore gold apparel, and cheered, as many intense sets were played, remaining steadfast in remembering who it was for and why they were there.
Another activity hosted this month in Bryce Valley was the Gold-Chalk Dance. To my astonishment, many members of the student body attended, and everyone had a blast. Who knew that painting each other with chalk could be so much fun.
And the last, but certainly not the least of our many competitions, was the class gold jars. These were jars that were set aside for any cash contributions that the student body could provide. Obviously, this activity was a success as students pooled any cash they could find in order to win the prize at the end of the month, but the prize can’t have been the only incentive. I am sure that many of the students contributed their cash not only with the prize in mind, but with the purpose and intention of providing funding for childhood cancer research.
Yes, it truly was a successful gold month, because of all the contributions and support provided by the students of Bryce Valley High School.
