On May 20, the Piute County commissioners met with Forest Service managers in Junction to discuss a temporary fix for Dry Creek Canyon Road. The road, which runs up east from near Piute Reservoir Dam toward Greenwich, was rendered impassable by flash floods last summer.
County officials hoped that Fishlake National Forest could use either disaster assistance funds or NRCS watershed funds to fix the road permanently, which would require expensive engineering. Forest Service staffers couldn’t commit to any funding but planned to apply to the regional office for disaster assistance funds.
In the meeting, county crews offered to work the road at least to make it passable for now even though culverts wouldn’t be replaced yet, and the Forest Service would provide some equipment.
Since the meeting, both the county and the Forest Service have done work on the road to make it passable for now, though a long-term fix with engineered culverts for future floods is still uncertain.
