An 11-year-old girl was rescued Thursday evening after being seriously injured by a rock fall at the Lower Calf Creek Falls hiking trail near Escalante.
A natural rock fall had caused several rocks to come down from a cliff near the waterfall. The girl was struck in the leg and severely injured by what must have been quite a large a rock.
Family members and other bystanders were able to give first aid and create a makeshift tourniquet while calling 911 for help, Sheriff Houston told Jeff Richards for Cedar City News.
Garfield County Sheriff’s deputies and Search and Rescue, Escalante Fire Department personnel and a Classic Air medical helicopter crew out of Page, Arizona, all responded to the scene.
They reached the girl approximately 70 minutes from the time of injury, Houston said. The girl was then transported via the Classic Air helicopter to St. George Regional Hospital for further treatment.
Sheriff Houston had not heard anything about her condition as of Friday afternoon.
