A kid's crayon drawing of a home decorated with a Christmas tree and presents. There is a fan on the ceiling above the tree. In the living room next to the room with the tree, there are some easy chairs and various devices.

“A Big Serving of Christmas” is the third of eight Christmas articles received from Wayne High School students. Three of them were published in The Byway’s most recent December print paper. All will be featured online.

Christmas is a great time of year to serve people and do small acts of kindness. It always brings people joy and makes them feel loved. Even the smallest acts of service can make someone’s day.

One of the things my family has done is putting together a little basket of dinner things and then dropping it off to them. Another thing we have done in the past is “Elfing” people. This is when we put together a small treat bag or make cookies and put it on their porch, knock and run. They never know who it is but it’s nice to know that we did something kind for them.

A big thing that we have done in the recent past is getting together with our cousins and going caroling instead of giving gifts to each other. This is nice because we are using the money we would normally spend on each other and giving it to someone who is in need more than we are. None of us really need anything from the other person so this is a better way to celebrate Christmas. We get a little bag with some things in it and sing them a song to try and brighten their holidays.

A simple thing we do around the holiday is making sugar cookies and taking them to the older people and our friends. It’s fun to decorate them and have fun with family and then seeing the faces of when we give them to the people. It brightens my day as well as theirs when we do a simple act of kindness and goodness.

Serving people is only one small tradition that my family has during the holidays. A tradition that we have had forever is just the simple getting pajamas on Christmas Eve. I like it because it’s not super over the top, but it’s fun to see the different types we get every year.

Another tradition we have on Christmas Eve is having a really nice dinner. We get out the nice dishes and formally set up the table to enjoy the nice dinner that was prepared for us. It’s nice to have a great dinner and have time to just sit and talk around the table with family.

Probably one of my favorites is when we would put up a sheet in the hallway so when we woke up, we couldn’t see anything that we got until my parents said we could come out. That was so fun when I was younger. It would build so much suspense, and I would get so giddy to find out what I got for Christmas.
