RICHFIELD, Utah (March 4, 2023) — The girls 1A state basketball tournament was held at the Sevier Valley Center March 1-4. The state championship came down to two powerful teams who had worked hard to get themselves up the ranks all week.

Tabiona, a number 7 seed team, beat out both the number 2 seed Wendover on Thursday, and the number 3 seed Valley on Friday. Saturday, at 4:30 p.m., they came pumped to take on the number 4 seed Wayne — they’d done it the two days before, they could do it again.

But Wayne also came in ready to win, having beaten the number 1 seed Rich just the day before. In the end the Badgers gained a narrow victory over the persistent Tigers, just 29-26. This would be Wayne’s first state win since 2004.

Wayne’s Lady Badgers certainly proved themselves with both a region and a state win this year! AnDee VanDyke, a senior, scored 12 points, 6 of which were 3 pointers. Her teammates and fellow seniors, H. Taylor, Haylie Durfey, Aspen New, and Kate Torgerson, also finished out their high school careers with some great plays and points.

The team placings for girls 1A state basketball were as follows:

Team Placings and Final Games Scores

  1. Wayne, state champs 29-26 against Tabiona
  2. Tabiona (26-29)
  3. Valley, 43-37 against Rich
  4. Rich (37-43)
  5. Monument Valley, 50-48 against Piute
  6. Manila, 35-29 against Bryce Valley
  7. Piute (48-50)
  8. Bryce Valley (29-35)

Congratulations girls basketball on an amazing season! And thank you to the community for always cheering on these girls win or lose.
