Panguitch Defends 1st Place at Boys 1A State Basketball Championship

This is an old news article from a previous year. The results in this article are from the 2023 boys 1A state basketball tournament. Read the most recent results in Boys State Basketball Results 2024.

RICHFIELD, Utah — The boys 1A state basketball tournament, like the girls tournament, was held at the Sevier Valley Center March 1-4. The Panguitch and Piute boys met once again at state, but unfortunately for the T-Birds, the Bobcats were able to defend their place as number one.

The Panguitch and Piute boys have had quite the rivalry over the past couple years. They met each other at state basketball and then baseball in 2022. Many of these same boys then ended up battling for the win at region basketball in 2023, and again at state.

Looking at the stats, though, Panguitch has had quite the impressive basketball season. Overall the Panguitch boys won 24 games this season, and lost only three. Piute, on Panguitch’s heels, won 21, and lost six. It was no surprise that the matchup came down to these two.

Finishing off a great season, the two teams met at 6:30 p.m. Saturday to settle the score. The championship game ended at 58-46: Panguitch was victorious! Tucker Chappell led the team’s scoring with 12 points, and Spencer Talbot led in rebounds with 10.

The team placings for boys 1A state basketball were as follows:

Team Placings and Final Game Scores

  1. Panguitch, 58-46 against Piute
  2. Piute (46-58)
  3. Tabiona, 56-54 against Wendover
  4. Wendover (54-56)
  5. Rich, 52-49 against Manila
  6. Bryce Valley, 41-34 against Monticello
  7. Manila (49-52)
  8. Monticello (34-41)

Congratulations boys basketball for the great games you’ve played this season! And thank you to the community for always cheering them on win or lose.
