Trauma Recovery Committee Created in Support after Enoch Tragedy

Canyon Creek Services announced Tuesday that it is participating in a committee supporting those affected by the recent Enoch tragedy. As a special project for the Enoch community, the committee would focus on mental health needs after trauma.

“A committee of mental health professionals, community members, trauma specialists, and nonprofits with aligned missions has been formed to address the ongoing need for mental health support for community members after the recent tragedy in Enoch,” wrote Kait Sorensen, Executive Director of Canyon Creek Services.

The partnership includes Canyon Creek, the Family Support Center, the Iron County Sheriff’s Office and Enoch City. According to the Cedar City Mental Health website, “These resources are available to all in the area that may have been impacted by the Enoch/Haight tragedy.”

The Need for Trauma Recovery Resources

Sadly tragedy has hit Southern Utah hard this winter. And while the same funding may not apply to all situations, the treatment options and coping strategies are the same for anyone who has experienced trauma.

Trauma is a deeply distressing or disturbing experience, often caused by an accident, crime or natural disaster. According to the American Psychological Association, “Immediately after the event, shock and denial are typical. Longer term reactions include unpredictable emotions, flashbacks, strained relationships, and even physical symptoms like headaches or nausea.”

The committee recognizes a recurring need for trauma recovery resources in Enoch and the surrounding areas.

“Anyone who has been affected can visit this link to find an assessment for ongoing symptoms from trauma and to get connected to the resources available and options for services,” wrote Sorensen.

In addition, Canyon Creek Services and the Family Support Center are accepting donations to pay for mental health services.
