GARFIELD and KANE COUNTIES, Utah — On Tuesday, January 3, a little after 5:00 p.m. some of Garfield County, Kane County, and parts of Northern Arizona experienced a widespread power outage. The problem was identified to be a malfunction in Glen Canyon.
Fortunately Garkane’s crews were very quick to identify and fix the problem. The power outage lasted a little over an hour for Garfield County residents. And Kane and Northern Arizona were fixed within the next hour.
Garkane later posted on Facebook the cause of the power outage: “A mechanism at the Glen Canyon dam malfunctioned which caused our main substation to trip, causing the widespread outage,” they wrote. “We were able to bypass that mechanism in the short term and get power restored.”
As far as The Byway could gather, there were no incidents of injury or lasting effects related to the outage.
Residents and tourists were able to stay reasonably warm. And the power came back on quickly enough to not affect school or work schedules. Although, there were temporary concerns that it might be so.
Thank you Garkane for your reliable service and commitment to the Southern Utah communities. Fixing the power can be extremely inconvenient during the holidays, but we’re so glad you do it!
