voting ballot and "I voted" stickers

From the day the Constitution of the United States of America was ratified in 1788, up until the present day, numerous changes have been made and are continually being made in relation to how we vote, who can vote, and where voting takes place.

Despite these changes, one thing is for sure: each and every one of our votes is so important, despite modern society’s common views on voting.

As I did my own research, I sought to find reasons why voting is of such great importance. My research led to the following conclusion: voting gives each eligible citizen the opportunity to participate in their democracy. A list provided by AltaMed supports this conclusion with the following examples:

1. “Elections have consequences. Every vote matters.”

A low voter turnout results in a very limited group of voters, which makes every individual vote even more statistically meaningful. Certain ideas could seemingly be “set in stone,” but change drastically due to a low voter turnout.

2. “It’s your right. Not voting is giving up your voice.”

Voting gives you the opportunity to vote for leaders who will best represent both you and your interests and ideas. This right was not easily obtained. It took many years of protests and fighting to reach this point — hence the reason it is crucial that your vote be utilized to its fullest extent.

3. “It’s your money.”

Voting allows you the opportunity to influence how your tax dollars are being spent.

4. “Voting is an opportunity for change.”

There are a countless number of social issues that are influenced by those running in elections. Your vote allows you to have a say in who will determine social agendas.

5. “Your community depends on you!”

Many people in your community may not understand the importance of voting or even be eligible at this time. For these reasons, it is crucial that you take the time to vote and be a voice not only for yourself, but for those around you as well.

As ballots go out, both myself and The Byway strongly encourage each of you to take the time to vote. Vote for those who you feel best portray qualities such as honesty, integrity and bravery as they represent your communities, ideas and beliefs.

As for those who are not yet registered, take the time to do so! Don’t miss the opportunity to use your voice!
