A college girl holding books and a backpack gives a thumbs up

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

– Nelson Mandela

Education is available through a wide variety of sources. Fortunately, there seems to be an option that works for every individual, even though it often takes time to find out what is best and most enjoyable for us personally.

Along with many other individuals, I am choosing to pursue an education by attending Southern Utah University this fall. Because of this, I share the same questions as most new students: What do I need to take? How do I prepare? What are the benefits of attending a college?

To answer my questions, I referred to my peers, my parents, former college attendees, and of course, Google. These sources helped me narrow my “must have” list down to what are considered to be the most “crucial” items.

To Bring to College:

School Supplies:

  • Calendar/planner
  • Laptop
  • Notebooks
  • Pencils, pens, highlighters
  • Calculator

Daily Living Supplies:

  • Hamper
  • Towels
  • Shower caddy
  • Trash can + bags
  • Power strip
  • Tupperware + microwavable bowl
  • Plastic dishes + utensils
  • Set of pots & pans
  • Bedding
  • Toilet paper + paper towels
  • Important personal documents

To Prepare for College:

  • Research a variety of jobs near your university that interest you.
  • Meet with a financial counselor or advisor to discuss your financial situation or receive a tour of the campus — making finding classes easier on the first day!
  • Get to know your roommates before moving in — this makes it easier to adjust!
  • Make time for yourself! Big changes can be stressful, don’t forget to take time to relax & de-stress when needed.

Like many, I find leaving the comfort of my own home and going to college to be a bit nerve racking, but it doesn’t need to be!

Do your research, ask questions, and find what makes you the most comfortable and content as you make goals, meet new people and attend classes. Over time you will find what works best for you, and begin to see the benefits for yourself. Nelson Mandela said it best: “one day you may just change the world.”
