On Tuesday June 21, 2022, Mid-Utah Radio held its fourth annual Sports Awards. Several athletes along the Byway were recognized at the event. Jaden W., Piute, was named Boys Basketball Defensive Player of the year. Kyler B., Panguitch, as the Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year after winning State in 1A shot put, 1A discus, and 1A javelin. Kyler was also a finalist in the overall Male Athlete of the Year award.
DJ H., Panguitch, was awarded Volleyball Defensive Player of the Year. She had 462 digs, 29 aces, 620 receptions, and 47 errors.
Adelaide E., Panguitch, won Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year as the 1A State Champion. Completing the race in 19:35.7. Adelaide also won Girls Track & Field Overall Athlete of the Year — winning state in 1A 3200 M, 1A 1600 M, 1A 800 M, and 1A medley relay. Adelaide was also awarded the overall Female Athlete of the Year.
Panguitch High School was a School of the Year finalist after claiming four state championships and three runner-up finishes at state.
Piute coach Eric Jessen was named a Coach of the Year finalist in Volleyball and Boys Basketball.
The John Yardley Impact award was presented to Camille Shakespear, life-long Escalante Moqui. You can read more about Camille’s dedication in this issue.
The Mid-Utah Radio Spring Sports Athletes of the Year were voted on by broadcasters, coaches and fans. The fan vote counted as 20% of the overall vote, while the coaches vote counted as 40% and the Mid-Utah Radio/CentraCom broadcasters vote counted as 40%.
